What is TNR?
TNR is a comprehensive plan where community cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and returned to their home territory. Cat populations are gradually reduced. Disease and malnutrition are greatly reduced. The cats live healthy, safe, and peaceful lives in their territories.
Benefits of TNR
- Feral cat populations are stabilized at management levels, preventing overpopulation problems.
- Feral cats benefit their communities by keeping rodent populations in check.
- Annoying mating behaviors such as fighting, howling and spraying are eliminated.
- TNR is more cost effective than repeated attempts at eradication.By decreasing the number of euthanasias at local shelters, there is a substantial savings to the taxpayer. It costs an average of $130 to trap, house, kill, and dispose of an animal, compared with about $25 for sterilization.
- TNR frees-up valuable space in animal shelters and rescues.
- TNR has proven to be the most humane and effective way to control feral cat populations and to improve their quality of life. This method is being used with success all over the world.
